ASSIGNMENT 7:Introduction to Flipped Instruction or Turning the Traditional Classroom on its Head.
Dear EFL teachers,
This week you are going to learn about one of the most cutting edge teaching approaches which use videos (and technology in general) to turn traditional classroom on its head and empowers students to become independent, autonomous and responsible learners. It goes wonderfully together with EFL blogs and might help you save a lot of time and accomplish much more in the classroom. Task 1: Study the resources posted below and write your own definition for FLIPPED INSTRUCTION (in no less than 500 words). Post your definitions below, as a comment to this post.
Task 2: Various American schools and universities use flipped instruction to teach English. For example, Ohio State University created a separate YouTube ESL Flipped Channel where they post new videos for ESL students every week. What would be 4-5 benefits of the flipped classroom model for language teaching? The lesson should require your students to create a final product using an online tool, for example: an audio presentation using Voki, Blabberize or Vocaroo, a video essay using Movenote, Voicethread or Narrable, a grammar journal or a vocabulary graphic organizer saved in Google Drive, or an online poster using Glogster or Thinglink.
Task 1 I studied the full given information and i understood that a flipped information or a flipped classroom are interrelated. A flipped instruction means that the usual instruction is reversed. Instead if listening to a lecture in the classroom and answering comprehension questions at home, students would listen to the lecture at home and discuss the questions during class time. A flipped instruction means more time for student-student interaction because teachers aren't lecturing to students during class time. Robyn Brinks Lockwood said very nice about what is a teacher in a flipped classroom: "is not a sage on the stage; but a guide on the side", which emphasizes the student - centered nature.Flipped instructions can include different kind of contents like online articles, online videos, power point presentations, podcasts, publications or campus systems or even your own audio/video recordings. The flipped instruction can motivate those students who aren't , to participate with the ret of their classmates. Using flipped instructions we can make students more likely to do the tasks in the classroom. The use of the flipped instruction has numerous benefits such as : - a more "humanized" classroom - more personalized attention from teacher to students. - an increase in students' quality of work - a decrease i students' boredom - an increase in students' motivation - a reduction in absenteeism - an increase in students; interest in all subjects After studying the whole information i think it's worth to try it....
I consider that flipped classroom is quite necessary nowadays when inclusive education is introduced in our schools and we have to focus on individualized teaching . This way of teaching would give us the possibility to manage to pay attention to every student in class and offering feedback we could see growth in sdudent's development.The flipped classroom constitutes a role change for instructors,who give up their front-of-the-class position in favor of a more collaborative and cooperative contribution to the teaching process. There is a concomitant change in the role of students, many of whom are used to being cast as passive participants in the education process, where instruction is served to them. The flipped model puts more of the responsibility for learning on the shoulders of students while giving them greater impetus to experiment. Activities can be student-led, and communication among students can become the determining dynamic of a session devoted to learning through hands-on work. What the flip does particularly well is to bring about a distinctive shift in priorities— from merely covering material to working toward mastery of it.

Task 3.Most of all I liked the Memory: ESL interactive lesson. All of them are very good but I decided to analyse the first. The fact it's flipped already makes it completely different from typical classes. One more thing -the use of PADLET - a web tool which enables the students to leave comments on the wall the teacher created - a trick we almost never do in a typical class, unless we are very smart teachers in means of modern technologies, web tool using and it's a school equipped by the last word of technology which means each student has a computer at his working place. The information the teacher provides is colorful, well designed , structured and presented in an interactive way, which is also not available in a simple class since there is a lack of board space . She focuses on the reading skills -text instructions, listening skills -video, writing skills -comments on the wall and, finally, speaking prepare a short speech. What a successful combination of all language skills within one single flipped instruction.

Students can access material at the time that is best form them 3. Students can review content more than once, before, during and after class 4. The lectures are recorded and used across courses. 5. Task 3 I liked the most E-portfolio.It is different from the traditional approaches most Moldova teachers use on a daily basis that it is a new web tool that make students to get more organised and develop digital skills. There are used you tube videos and blog options and it develops writing, pronunciation and reading (they have to reread the studied material and select the most important)

Of course every teacher can see it in his own way, but I don't think I would change something about yours. Task 1:Flipped classroom is a new teaching tool that can be introduced in our learning process as well as in others states.In flipped classrooms it is inversed the role of teacher and children.Teacher has the role of supervisor ,they save a lot of time ,and have the possibility to work with each student individualy in this way building stronger relationships with them. Students are those who take control of their own learning.Flipped classrooms are reversed classrooms.At home students watch short video lectures made by their theacher ,while class-time is devoted to exercices ,projects ,or disscusions.Students have the possibilty to review lecture a lot of times ,and it will be accesible to everyone,even to those students who are shy or have dissabilities.In traditional classroom teacher has the role of lecture and not every student can capture what is being said at the instant the speaker says it.Flipped classrooms can include not only videos ,we can use diagrams ,power point presentations ,grammar boxes ,articles related to the topic ,video/songs .e.tcAs a result students are becoming more responsible and more active participants in learning process ,they also interact with their colleagues and learn from one another.In conclussion we can summarize that Flipped classrooms give to instructors and students more time to apply their knowledge and demonstrate their ability to work. Task 3:For me more interesting was E-portollios because is more related to our Moldovan teaching process ,we also have portfollios and I think I will use this type of Flipped classrooms for my students.I think is it more interesting for students to do E -portfollios instead of Paper ones.They can improve their digital skills and also improve speaking ,grammar,spelling.
Task 2. Benefits of the flipped classroom model for language teaching: 1. teachers can better identify each student’s needs during in-class tasks and give individualized instruction. By coming to class prepared to ask questions and solve problems with their peers after viewing the subject matter on their own, the students feel empowered to direct their own learning; 2. students are engaged in activities in class having the teacher as a facilitator; 3. students learn through activities and get the immediate feedback; 4. students learn at home, at their own pace using different resources, and classroom time is used to extend that learning in a much more personalized and collaborative way; 5. it also might focus on project based learning, where teachers create opportunities for students to explore real-world problems and use challenges that arise as entry points for learning.
Task 3. Final E-portofolio seems close to me to be used as a model. It is different from the traditional approaches most Moldova teachers use on a daily basis as students study the necessary materials outside class, watch videos-examples how to do it, and the most exciting and important is the final result they get: a very colourful and inspirational video. Students use online technologies as youtube videos and blogs that teach students digital and organizational skills. Students work much on their pronunciation, presentation of the material and readiing.

Task 1: As I understood that “Flipped Instruction “ or “ flipped classroom” is a new method of teaching and is turning the traditional classroom on its head. A flipped classroom is one where students are introduced to content at home, and practice working through it at school. Students watch pre-recorded videos at home, then come to school to do the homework armed with questions and at least some background knowledge. This doubles student access to teachers–once with the videos at home, and again in the classroom, increasing the opportunity for personalization and more precise guiding of learning. In the flipped classroom model, students practice under the guidance of the teacher, while accessing content on their own. A side benefit is that teachers can record lectures that emphasize critical ideas, power standards, and even the pace of a given curriculum map. It also has the side benefit of allowing students to pause and to review the content of the new topic.
Task:2 1.Students can consume lecture materials at their own pace. 2. Students can review and replay any parts of the lecture that they’re having trouble with as many times as they need. 3. The teacher is present while students apply new knowledge. 4. It promotes student-centered learning and collaboration 5. Lessons and content are more accessible (provided there is tech access) 6. It is easier for parents to see what’s going on.
Task3: I ‘ve analysed the flipped classroom lesson plans and I think that the most useful for me it would be “End of semester final e-portfolio lesson”. I think that my pupils would like to do a digital portofolio because they know already to use online tools like youtube and blogs.

Dear Tatiana, I appreciate a lot your enthusiasm to learn many new things, this is what you do in our project. I could notice that both during the online sessions we had and your work done on the week assignment. I liked a lot the thing that you have made a movenote speech, motivating your students to work and study the topic. As for the flipped lesson, you could make it more detailed, using more activities.
Task 2: BENEFITS 1) Access to additional info. Students can access any additional information besides the tutorials offered by the teacher and gain deeper knowledge in a way that better fits their personal learning ability. Each student is unique by himself as well as his personal way of learning. Using the same purpose which was initially set by the instructor as the main teaching goal, he might search for different sources providing the same knowledge but in a different way which is more comprehensible for him personally. Since, as we know, there are 8 different multiple intelligences, instead of just, for example, watching a tutorial where a person speaks about Present Simple, a musical intelligence student could find a song specially designed for teaching this tense, which would be easier for the student to remember. 2) Establishing a personal pace of learning. Students have more time to analyze the info, sharing opinions and suggestions with each other and the teacher before the class, while in class they spend time more productively by sharpening the acquired knowledge, discussing details, accomplishing problem-solving tasks and applying the information they have learnt. 3) Saving time. 45 minutes of class is almost never enough to finish whatever has been started. An opportunity to escape from time-consuming explanations and to go straight to the second stage, which is discussing details, is an essential step up in finding more effective ways to achieve the initial goal within a less period of time. For example, a theme, usually covered within 3 classes, where the I class is usually wasted on explanation with minimum level of feedback (because the first ‘absorbing’ is never accompanied by effective feedback), can be better acquired within the same amount of classes based on liquidation gaps in knowledge rather than the lack of them. 4) More effective evaluation. Flipped classrooms let teachers fix the students’ personal learning progress. This way, individual evaluation becomes more effective since students get grades according to the way the teacher sees their personal progress. 5) Uninterrupted process of teaching. According to the schedule students have English classes twice a week. Two classes per week are extremely few. There appears a huge gap of language practice between them, during which students successfully manage to forget not only the topic discussed in class, but the teaches as well )) There is no need to mention the eagerness which they apply while doing homework. Flipped classrooms are a great solution since they fill in these gaps and serve as a means of continuous dealing with the language. Task 1: Hello, Svetlana So, the question is what is flipped instruction. Honestly saying, I wanted to just copy/paste some abstracts from the sources you gave since it’s so well described there)) But after taking a look at what others wrote, I changed my mind and here is what I understood: Flipping means turning backwards and, consequently, it deals with a way of teaching completely opposite to the one most of us are ‘addicted’ to. The point is that the teacher or instructor gives a task to be accomplished before the class which usually involves reading articles, watching videos in order to accomplish tasks referring to applying listening skills. It also deals with watching tutorials on how a definite goal can be achieved. Goals can be different depending on what is currently being taught. While outside learning students interact with each other, share ideas and therefore gain even more knowledge than a typical learning process can give. When in class the teacher plays the role of a guide and controls the process of deeper ‘diving’ into the issue. He gives more details on the parts the students could not understand while learning outside class. Flipping classroom brings students to necessity to be active learners and take control of their own learning as well as successfully apply the gained knowledge during class. It also brings teachers closer to students from the point of view of applying modern technologies. What’s not less important, implementing this approach into their teaching style teachers are able to save time and get rid of nerve-consuming paper-work. At least partly. There are many advantages of this approach for both students and teachers, such as: students learn more deeply, students are more active participants in learning, students, interaction increases and students learn from one another, teachers and students get more feedback. Talking about feedback, one more thing should be mentioned: typical classes are also supposed to make teacher’s feedback available for students, but there should be highlighted the fact that this kind of feedback is more common, less specific and less relating to individual needs of each student. Since teachers get more familiar to each student and his personal way of acquiring new information, and their interaction increases in a way that fits these personal needs, as a result every student receives individualized feedback, intended to improve, guide and coordinate his personal knowledge, reflection and attitude toward the learning subject. Task 1 Bernard Show said " If you give me an apple and I give you back an apple, I go home with an apple. But if You give me an idea and I give you back an idea, I go home with two ideas." I recognize that I have checked a lot of sources about Flipped lesson and Flipped Instruction and the best synonym that I can propose is “mirror”. I imagine myself at an ordinary lesson looking in the mirror, but I don’t see there my face but my student’s one. I think that the best definition of Flipped Lesson is – Education centered on the student. The modern trends require student’s implication as more as possible. Flipped lessons are the best variant for this. We, teachers, are used to come in front of pupils with a concrete and limited material and do different activity on it- speak, ask-answer, correct mistakes and analyze. As the teacher is one, the related idea would be one too. This aspect is totally different into a Flipped classroom- where students come up with their own interpretation of the materials and they present their ideas to the class thus ensuring an exchange of opinions, a sharing of knowledge and ideas. We are told to give students homework that contains only 5% from the whole materials studied during the lesson. Flipped Lesson permits teacher to involve students more than the teacher is. Even this assessment is based on Flipped Instructions- and I see how interesting and easy it is. I can take how much time I need to do it. I can use the source I find more useful. I can compare my opinion with my colleagues. The main purpose of Flipped classroom is getting every student involved in the activity. Here, the role of teacher is only to guide, to be the mentor of activity and lead students’ ideas into necessary direction. I always tell my students that 45 minutes for studying English is not enough. Flipped lessons broaden the period of studying English and these 25-30 minutes that student spends at home are only for himself- they are not divided for other 20 students. - The indicated types of lessons differ from traditional approaches of Moldovan teachers by their structure, form and content. We are used to plan our lessons with ERRE model. Here, we see another method of organizing our lesson. I think it is the best response to the task :” The modern technologies within lessons.”
- Analyzing all the Flipped lessons I can say the used online tools are: youtube, googlemap, wordpress, PowerPoint, Socrative App, stuweb.hbu.edu- a graphic organizer, glogster.
- The lesson I liked most are Simple Lessons from Kindergarten to High School which are focused on creating, evaluating, analyzing, understanding, applying; and lessons that are posted on ASEM’s blog. They are focused on reading, comprehension, writing, speaking, analyzing.
- Through the modern technologies the teacher: creates and proposes differentiate methods of studying a foreign language; increases students’ motivation and interest; offers students a variety of web tools, giving them the opportunity to be themselves; provides a better understanding of the content;
Task 1 Flipped instruction is a type of learning that is different from the traditional learning by offering instructions often online, outside of the classroom. The teacher performs activities, including homework, the students watch online lectures, collaborate in online discussions with their classmates, or carry out research at home and engage in concepts in the classroom with the guidance of the teacher. In traditional teaching, class discussions are typically centered on the teacher, who controls the flow of the conversation, the teacher presents the same information at the same pace, each topic in class receives a fixed amount of time for all students. As a result the students get the information in a different way, some of them feel comfortable, some get bored and some get frustrated because need more time to understand the material, during the class. The students may be limited to activities in which they work independently or in small groups on an application task designed by the teacher. During the flipped class more time can be spent in class on higher-order thinking skills such as problem-finding, collaboration, design and problem solving as students tackle difficult problems, work in groups, research, and construct knowledge with the help of their teacher and peers. Nadia, I appreciate your critical thinking around this topic and lesson plans, but I would like to say that nothing is impossible, if you try hard. Such things may work from time to time even in our country at our lessons, but to do this, it requires much effort and time from us. As for the lesson you have created, I would say it can be just the beginning, you have there very few activities. You were given some examples, you could follow them when creating your own.
Task 1: “Flipped instruction” means a dynamic pedagogical model in which the process of instruction is defined through videos students watch at home, before the class session (that means the usual classroom content and homework assignments are reversed), then valuable class time is devoted to exercises, projects or open discussions where the teacher encourages students in individual inquiry, creative work and collaborative effort and social interaction between peers. Students need to put into practice what they’ve learned. It motivates them to prepare for class. This new type of instruction means more responsible students about learning, they can experiment what they’ve studied. It involves students’ own curiosity-fueled by exploration. Students are more active participants in the learning process. The student role shifts from passive recipient to active constructor of knowledge. Interaction increases and students also learn from one another. The truth is that not all students learn at the same pace. If the need arises the students can replay lessons as much as they want, so struggling students have more time to master tough topics through replaying. They can pause, jump to a specific section of the video, or even replay it at a faster speed for quick review. The professor circulates among the desks to test what students have learned or to see if anyone has questions, help clarify points of confusion and monitor progress. The teacher can spend more time interacting with students instead of lecturing. The theory is that teachers can better identify each student’s needs during in-class tasks and give individualized instruction. I really enjoyed the End of semester final e-portfolio lesson” because we use portfolios too so an on-line portfolio would be great too. It will help save time during the lessons and it could be beneficial for the students to keep track of their works/papers all the time as a kind of re-freshment before an evaluation paper or even the BAC exam.

Students watch pre-recorded videos at home, then come to school to do the homework armed with questions and at least some background knowledge. Task 3: Closer to my teaching process is the project ,,A Flipped Kindergarten Lesson: Three little pigs''.Students will watch The Three Little Pigs YouTube video at home the day before the lesson. After watching this video, students will print out and complete a story map about the fairy tale. Students will bring this story map to the school next day. In traditional classes the teacher would proposed to watch the cartoon in the classroom losing a lot of time but in this case the pupils came prepared and they are ready to the next activities. The lesson is focussed on the writing, reading and understanding skills.

Task 1: After studying the given links I came to the conclusion that FLIPPED INSTRUCTION is an extraordinary and fresh way of delivering information to the students, that implies new methodology in the proces teaching. The focus is put on better understanding of the teaching material. Students can do their best in learning a new topic on their own, then clarity those parts or steps that seemed to them confusing with the help of a teacher, who plays the role of a "guide" and not the one of "google" like in traditional classes, just giving the necessary amount of information. Task 2: I'm really not sure if the flipped classroom model for language teaching is going to succeed in our country, and the main reason may be the fact that our community is uninformed with its benefits. For example, lots of people think that listening very attentively during classes is the best way to understand the topic, well then wouldn't it be better to have the possibility to listen to it several times according to your will? Then what about home tutoring? The necessity of it will be considerably reduced. There is a common belief which says that teachers can do almost everything, but sadly none of us can deal with a number of 15-18 students at the same time and be sure they all understand what we were teaching. ReplyDeleteI studied the full given information and i understood that a flipped information or a flipped classroom are interrelated. A flipped instruction means that the usual instruction is reversed. Instead if listening to a lecture in the classroom and answering comprehension questions at home, students would listen to the lecture at home and discuss the questions during class time. A flipped instruction means more time for student-student interaction because teachers aren't lecturing to students during class time. Robyn Brinks Lockwood said very nice about what is a teacher in a flipped classroom: "is not a sage on the stage; but a guide on the side", which emphasizes the student - centered nature.Flipped instructions can include different kind of contents like online articles, online videos, power point presentations, podcasts, publications or campus systems or even your own audio/video recordings.

The information the teacher provides is colorful, well designed , structured and presented in an interactive way, which is also not available in a simple class since there is a lack of board space . She focuses on the reading skills -text instructions, listening skills -video, writing skills -comments on the wall and, finally, speaking prepare a short speech. What a successful combination of all language skills within one single flipped instruction.

DeleteTask 1: As I understood that “Flipped Instruction “ or “ flipped classroom” is a new method of teaching and is turning the traditional classroom on its head. A flipped classroom is one where students are introduced to content at home, and practice working through it at school. Students watch pre-recorded videos at home, then come to school to do the homework armed with questions and at least some background knowledge. This doubles student access to teachers–once with the videos at home, and again in the classroom, increasing the opportunity for personalization and more precise guiding of learning. In the flipped classroom model, students practice under the guidance of the teacher, while accessing content on their own. A side benefit is that teachers can record lectures that emphasize critical ideas, power standards, and even the pace of a given curriculum map. It also has the side benefit of allowing students to pause and to review the content of the new topic.

1) Access to additional info. Students can access any additional information besides the tutorials offered by the teacher and gain deeper knowledge in a way that better fits their personal learning ability.
Each student is unique by himself as well as his personal way of learning. Using the same purpose which was initially set by the instructor as the main teaching goal, he might search for different sources providing the same knowledge but in a different way which is more comprehensible for him personally. Since, as we know, there are 8 different multiple intelligences, instead of just, for example, watching a tutorial where a person speaks about Present Simple, a musical intelligence student could find a song specially designed for teaching this tense, which would be easier for the student to remember.
2) Establishing a personal pace of learning. Students have more time to analyze the info, sharing opinions and suggestions with each other and the teacher before the class, while in class they spend time more productively by sharpening the acquired knowledge, discussing details, accomplishing problem-solving tasks and applying the information they have learnt.
3) Saving time. 45 minutes of class is almost never enough to finish whatever has been started. An opportunity to escape from time-consuming explanations and to go straight to the second stage, which is discussing details, is an essential step up in finding more effective ways to achieve the initial goal within a less period of time. For example, a theme, usually covered within 3 classes, where the I class is usually wasted on explanation with minimum level of feedback (because the first ‘absorbing’ is never accompanied by effective feedback), can be better acquired within the same amount of classes based on liquidation gaps in knowledge rather than the lack of them.
4) More effective evaluation. Flipped classrooms let teachers fix the students’ personal learning progress. This way, individual evaluation becomes more effective since students get grades according to the way the teacher sees their personal progress.
5) Uninterrupted process of teaching. According to the schedule students have English classes twice a week. Two classes per week are extremely few. There appears a huge gap of language practice between them, during which students successfully manage to forget not only the topic discussed in class, but the teaches as well )) There is no need to mention the eagerness which they apply while doing homework.
Flipped classrooms are a great solution since they fill in these gaps and serve as a means of continuous dealing with the language. These way students are constantly and unconsciously involved into the process of learning which doesn’t let them forget the material and teacher’s suggestions necessary for fulfilling the tasks they are to accomplish.

So, the question is what is flipped instruction. Honestly saying, I wanted to just copy/paste some abstracts from the sources you gave since it’s so well described there)) But after taking a look at what others wrote, I changed my mind and here is what I understood:
Flipping means turning backwards and, consequently, it deals with a way of teaching completely opposite to the one most of us are ‘addicted’ to. The point is that the teacher or instructor gives a task to be accomplished before the class which usually involves reading articles, watching videos in order to accomplish tasks referring to applying listening skills. It also deals with watching tutorials on how a definite goal can be achieved. Goals can be different depending on what is currently being taught. While outside learning students interact with each other, share ideas and therefore gain even more knowledge than a typical learning process can give. When in class the teacher plays the role of a guide and controls the process of deeper ‘diving’ into the issue. He gives more details on the parts the students could not understand while learning outside class. Flipping classroom brings students to necessity to be active learners and take control of their own learning as well as successfully apply the gained knowledge during class. It also brings teachers closer to students from the point of view of applying modern technologies. What’s not less important, implementing this approach into their teaching style teachers are able to save time and get rid of nerve-consuming paper-work. At least partly.
There are many advantages of this approach for both students and teachers, such as: students learn more deeply, students are more active participants in learning, students, interaction increases and students learn from one another, teachers and students get more feedback.
Talking about feedback, one more thing should be mentioned: typical classes are also supposed to make teacher’s feedback available for students, but there should be highlighted the fact that this kind of feedback is more common, less specific and less relating to individual needs of each student. The very thing about flipping is completely opposite. Since teachers get more familiar to each student and his personal way of acquiring new information, and their interaction increases in a way that fits these personal needs, as a result every student receives individualized feedback, intended to improve, guide and coordinate his personal knowledge, reflection and attitude toward the learning subject. There is no need to add anything about its effectiveness in meeting students’ learning intelligences and providing better solutions to apply them at the maximum level in order to achieve best results.

I recognize that I have checked a lot of sources about Flipped lesson and Flipped Instruction and the best synonym that I can propose is “mirror”. I imagine myself at an ordinary lesson looking in the mirror, but I don’t see there my face but my student’s one. I think that the best definition of Flipped Lesson is – Education centered on the student. The modern trends require student’s implication as more as possible. Flipped lessons are the best variant for this. We, teachers, are used to come in front of pupils with a concrete and limited material and do different activity on it- speak, ask-answer, correct mistakes and analyze. As the teacher is one, the related idea would be one too. This aspect is totally different into a Flipped classroom- where students come up with their own interpretation of the materials and they present their ideas to the class thus ensuring an exchange of opinions, a sharing of knowledge and ideas. We are told to give students homework that contains only 5% from the whole materials studied during the lesson. Flipped Lesson permits teacher to involve students more than the teacher is.
Even this assessment is based on Flipped Instructions- and I see how interesting and easy it is. I can take how much time I need to do it. I can use the source I find more useful. I can compare my opinion with my colleagues. The main purpose of Flipped classroom is getting every student involved in the activity. Here, the role of teacher is only to guide, to be the mentor of activity and lead students’ ideas into necessary direction. I always tell my students that 45 minutes for studying English is not enough. Flipped lessons broaden the period of studying English and these 25-30 minutes that student spends at home are only for himself- they are not divided for other 20 students. - The lesson I liked most are Simple Lessons from Kindergarten to High School which are focused on creating, evaluating, analyzing, understanding, applying; and lessons that are posted on ASEM’s blog. They are focused on reading, comprehension, writing, speaking, analyzing.

Students need to put into practice what they’ve learned. It motivates them to prepare for class. The role of teacher is to be a superviser of before-,in-,and after-class activities. Another role is to manage the learning activities through giving strong and clear instructions/directions for watching videos of lectures, explanations – theoretical presentation of topical materials. ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the End of semester final e-portfolio lesson” because we use portfolios too so an on-line portfolio would be great too. It will help save time during the lessons and it could be beneficial for the students to keep track of their works/papers all the time as a kind of re-freshment before an evaluation paper or even the BAC exam.
Luminita, it's worth saying that the E-portfolio is "a kind of re-freshment" before the final evaluation. However, it is an excellent tool for the on-going or so-called formative assessment, which stresses on the process quality. ReplyDeleteThe flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions.
Task 2
Benefits:
Students have as much time as they need to solve a task;
Students and teacher become more confident;
The student is the one who work as much as the teacher, it’s more active than in classic type of lesson;
Continuous learning. Students are in touch with English not just 45 minutes during the lesson and some more minutes doing a simple homework. They are engaged in permanent research.

All the examples insist on communicative skills, each making reference to certain itools. The best one seems to be Memory: ESL interactive lesson, according to others analyze, because it is not active any more.

DeleteTask 1: AS I understood the FLIPPED classroom is a modern teaching methood that is versus of traditional method where the students are introduced to content at home, and practice working through it at school. Students watch pre-recorded videos at home, then come to school to do the homework armed with questions and at least some background knowledge. Giving them short video lectures to be viewed at home before the class session, class time is devoted to exercises, projects,or discussions. The notion of a flipped classroom draws on such concepts as active learning, student engagement, hybrid course design, and course podcasting. The value of a flipped class is in the repurposing of class time into a workshop where students can inquire about lecture content, test their skills in applying knowledge, and interact with one another in hands-on activities. During class sessions, instructors function as coaches or advisors, encouraging students in individual inquiry and collaborative effort.

Task 3: Closer to my teaching process is the project ,,A Flipped Kindergarten Lesson: Three little pigs''.Students will watch The Three Little Pigs YouTube video at home the day before the lesson. After watching this video, students will print out and complete a story map about the fairy tale. Students will bring this story map to the school next day. In traditional classes the teacher would proposed to watch the cartoon in the classroom losing a lot of time but in this case the pupils came prepared and they are ready to the next activities. The lesson is focussed on the writing, reading and understanding skills.

In a flipped classroom, students are involved in online lectures, collaborate in online discussions, or carry out research at home with the guidance of the teacher.The flipped classroom describes an opposite way of traditional teaching where students learn the new material outside of class, usually via reading or lecture videos, and then in classroom they do the harder work of assimilating that knowledge through strategies such as problem-solving, discussion or debates. In the flipped classroom the students take more responsibility for their own learning and study the content either individually or in groups before class and then they apply their knowledge. In this way the teacher is a guide, or a mentor, that provides a mentorship in the class. The students become more responsible in learning process, because the results depend on their capacity to learn, on their ability to achieve information. Significant learning opportunities can be gained through facilitating active learning, engaging students, guiding learning, correcting misunderstandings and providing timely feedback using a variety of pedagogical strategies. It is a good experience for students with different IQ, because they can choose the particular methods for learning. ReplyDelete“Flipped” class –is a new way of teaching, when pupils study the new material individually. They organize the time and way of studying at home, and then they share their acquired knowledge in class discussing the studied material. Teachers manage the activity, they guide students in their process to obtain adequate knowledge. Also in class pupils review the topic, clarify the missunderstanding, apply the obtained knowledge through different exercises or examples during the class. Such a way pupils study through discoverring, so they become responsible for their own learning, getting a deeper understanding of the content and how to use it. This is the constructivism - the way of developing metacognitive competences (learning to learn and learning to do).
In flipped class learning teachers can better identify each student’s needs during in-class tasks and give individualized instruction. When students come to class, they are prepared to ask questions and solve problems with their peers.
At these activities pupils are motivated to practice a foreign language like a natural way of acting or expressing themselves.
These lessons need much more time for a teacher for preparing them, but the pluses are that they create the opportunity for the pupils to accomodate the learning process to their personal situation, schedule or routine. Some of them need more time for preparing one subject when other do them very fast. when they encounter a problem they consult their teacher, who is always ready to answer them.
What can students study at home?
They can watch a video at home, either made by their teacher or from the internet, but suggested by him. Thus, the students can work at their own pace and repeat video as many times as necessary for them to take detailed notes or to go back to anything they may have missed. This process naturally and efficiently facilitates differentiated instruction that would usually take more time for the teachers to do in the classroom.
Also, I want to mention that flipped classes are good for all kind of pupils, because they are represent an approach to pupils' type of accepting and assimilation the information. they create active learning and in this kind of classes learning in interesting in comparison with traditional lessons where very often learning become a boring process, in wich generally can be observed two type of pupils "strong" - with high results and "weak" - with very low results.
I would propose to my students to enter the blog and watch some grammar topics (I have already posted some of them here http://mariaionesi.weebly.com/useful-grammar ), and also I would include some practising exercise, for evaluating themselves if they would understand those topics, and them, coming into the class, we would discuss the problems they would meet.

As for the lesson you have created I would suggest you to make a description of it first of all as you had those examples to see what students do at home and how your lesson will continue in the classroom and then provide your students with more activities.

-it is a new web tool that develops students digital skills .
-It is a powerful ,interactive resume of the multiple intelligence of a student.
- Creating an E-portfolio requires from students knowledge of how the web works and the message they have to convey.
- Pupils can consult online references and follow the given online examples using online tools.
-An E-portfolio displays students'works(not only archives)
Online tools used in this lesson were: Youtube .com, Wikipedia.org, Blogspot.com.
Students are sure to improve their pronunciation, reading,writing,listening ,speaking.

ReplyDelete After studying the given links I came to the conclusion that FLIPPED INSTRUCTION is an extraordinary and fresh way of delivering information to the students, that implies new methodology in the proces teaching. The focus is put on better understanding of the teaching material. Students can do their best in learning a new topic on their own, then clarity those parts or steps that seemed to them confusing with the help of a teacher, who plays the role of a "guide" and not the one of "google" like in traditional classes, just giving the necessary amount of information.
Task 2:
I'm really not sure if the flipped classroom model for language teaching is going to succeed in our country, and the main reason may be the fact that our community is uninformed with its benefits. For example, lots of people think that listening very attentively during classes is the best way to understand the topic, well then wouldn't it be better to have the possibility to listen to it several times according to your will? Then what about home tutoring? The necessity of it will be considerably reduced.
There is a common belief which says that teachers can do almost everything, but sadly none of us can deal with a number of 15-18 students at the same time and be sure they all understand what we were teaching. Flipped classroom allows us to spare time and focus on student A who has some questions while student B is practicing .
And why not to mention interest? It stands at the core of everything. Beautiful presentation with interactive sounds and colorful letters and backgrounds is going to have a better influence then a simple board or book.
Task 3:
The Moldavian traditional approaches in teaching are wholly based on "paper". Teachers cannot separate themselves from it. Taking as an example "portfolio" , they feel saifier to collect a 5kg folder of papers, than having a little link on their phones or computers and access it whatever they need to.
End of semester final e-portfolio lesson shows us perfectly how technologies can make our lives easier. Moreover it develops the whole set of skills even the esthetic one, why not?

DeleteWonderful insights! I like very much your critical thinking on this topic, it is worth apprecition. Pursuing excellence is not a one time job. It is a way of life. For this reason I would suggest everyone to try such kind of instruction first and then say if it works or not. Flipped classroom requires a lot of time from teachers' side and that's why educators in our country think it is difficult to use it. As you have mentioned above we are used to work with chalk and board, textbooks and copybooks. But it's time to change something. Here the flipped classroom comes.
Concerning your lesson plan, you provided your students with very nice activities to be done at hoem, I would suggest you to introduce in this lesson plan a description of all the activities, it is important to see how your lesson will continue in the classroom.

Task 1 Flipped classroom is a good way to keep students in touch all the time not only during the classes but also after classes. It allows us teachers and students to learn out of classes too and to increase their knowledge but not to forget what they have studied on classes. I liked the most E-portfolio and A Flipped Kindergarten Lesson. It is different from the traditional approaches. An E-portfolio is good for high school students, they can develop a lot of writing skills, digital skills and different web tools. Flipped Kindergarten Lesson is nice for young students to develop their listening skills, increase vocabulary and to do quiz tests etc.
