ASSIGNMENT 1: Create your first blog!



Dear EFL teachers,


This month I will be guiding you along as an online trainer - you will receive weekly updates with instructions which will help you get acquainted with the exciting world of blogs as teaching tools. Should you have any questions regarding these assignments, please do not hesitate to get in touch by email. I am wishing you the best of luck and hope that this month will be equally entertaining and productive for all of us. 

Deadline for completing the first assignment - October 19. 


Assignment 1

Task 1: Explore the blogs posted below and choose 2 which you liked best. How are these blogs used as teaching tools? What useful tips could we borrow from the blog authors? Post your answers below, as blog comments. 



Task 2: What kind of blog would you like to create as part of the EFL Blogging School Project (teacher blog, class blog, school blog or project blog)? How many sections would your blog include and how would you name them? (my lesson plans, my articles, my videos, my students, my CV, my best projects, my school profile, my colleagues, etc). What would be the purpose of your blog? For example: to post students homework and share it with the entire class, to publish students’ best work, to post lesson plans online, to share interesting online resources with students, to create an online portfolio for school administration, to encourage students to use certain online tools to learn English, to defend one's master (MA) or doctoral (PhD) degree, to participate in the “Teacher of the Year” contest, to present the blog for the 1st didactic degree defense, to involve students in a class or school project, to share lesson plans and useful resources with colleagues, etc. Post your reply below as a blog comment.

The two useful for me are Jennifer and Michelle ELLclassroom blog http://ellclassroom.com/category/lessons/english/ -an exchiting way of making short movies, this is quite interactive for our pupils and Edutech for Teachers blog http://edutech4teachers.edublogs.org/also for motivating activies and teaching support.

      Great start, Stela! So far your blog has a promising beginning - it is well organised and easy to navigate. Now you need to add various tasks and involve your students.     I am already captured by the idea of blogging!! Though my priority should be a completely different thing, I keep thinking about it even at night. Ladies, you’ve made a great impact on my life perception)))
    Now about the assignment: it’s absolutely understandable, easily readable and well structured. So, keep doing like that and, I hope, by the end of this project we won’t put your face to shame. Thank you for this great opportunity to grow as a modern teacher and a simple 21st century person))

      Maria, it is up to you to experiment with different types of blogs - just make sure double work will not be too time-consuming for you :)
      I wouls still suggest you start a teaching blog, then add information step by step - at this moment we are just at the initial stage, when you learn, experiment, post, delete, edit, etc. so no one will judge your work at this stage. Feel free to get inspired from the blogs listed in Task 1 and choose your own format. Good luck!

    Task 1. Of course, all the blogs serve me a tool for further work, but, the 2 I like the most are: http://tlcteach.edublogs.org/ and http://www.pointviewschoolroom3.blogspot.md/ as they offer a variety of tools/sites/models of using and samples of activities I could get inspired of.
    Task 2: I tend to create a class blog, in order to involve my students commenting, giving reasons on different quotations, shows etc, post their homework on the blog, study and work on civilization of English speaking countries.... . It will also be a good opportunity for parents and school administration to view the work of their children/students.

    I doubt that these blogs were created totaly for free......they just too beatiful. Both of them have a great educational value.

    Task 1: I like most:
    1) The English Blog http://jeffreyhill.typepad.com/english/#.U8j1g_mSzwo (I find this blog as a wonderful teaching tool. It attracted my attention especially through the rich collection of ideas: videos as role-plays, animations, cartoons, techniques, resources. We could borrow useful tips like the efficient descriptions and advices bellow the presentation.)
    and
    2) Edutech for Teachers blog http://edutech4teachers.edublogs.org/ (I like the way the things are posted because they seem interactive. All the tips are interesting and we could borrow the idea to add a little of fun in teaching).

    I try to use innovations during my lessons. That's why these blogs are like encyclopedia for my work. They contain a rich variey of tools, examples, texts ets that can be used at the lesson.
    However I would like to mention the creativity of http://povestindmatematica.ro/ blog. I practice storytelling with my little daughter and I see how raises her interest while listening. It is a good modality to transform the dificult aspects from learning English into such an interesting way.

    Task 2
    I would like to create a school blog, including the sections - My works, Students' work, Extra-school activities, Assignments; World of Posters and Collages
    I want to do something for myself, for my students and ofcourse something for my school. This blog will show the activity of our school. As many parents are abroad, they will have the posibility to check to propose to be involved in any activities from our school.

    1) I have explored the blogs you have posted and I can say that I really enjoyed them, and I hope that using blogs in my teaching work will encourage all my pupils and colleagues in doing a good job.
    The 2 blogs that I liked the best from which you proposed are: Florentina Berlan’s blog and Edutech for Teachers blog, because they are full of colourfull pictures and interesting stories for children and not only. Besides the work,all of us are inside a little child that believes in Prince and Princess and in other personages from books. The Edutech for Teachers includes a lot of information,articles,videos,pictures,games and other innovative tools that I enjoyed.
    2) I want to create an e-portfolio to collect and organize my materials and results.My e-portfolio will include the following: about me information, my best coursework, my extra-curricular activities, videos, photos...

It could be recommended to teachers of science, maths; I appreciate the library compartment because unfortunately we haven’t English books in our school library, so I think it’s very useful. Also here we can find information on very different topics like: health, trips, dances, art. As my hobby is knitting, I find quite helpful to read about it.

Edutech for Teachers http://edutech4teachers.edublogs.org/category/edu-fun-friday/ I like the way this blog is organized, the informations are posted in each month, here the students may take some ideas for writing an essay. “10 Rules for Your School’s Computer Lab” , it’s an amazing way to remember the rules.     Hello, I really like all these blogs. They are very interesting and they all have different tasks. I enjoy Maths blog full of fairy tales. I also enjoyed English blogs full of different ideas for students and not onlyfor them :) The most interesting I found The English Blog full of a lot of interesting videos such as: Ad of the Day: Imagine the Possibilities (Barbie).
    You asked me about the blog I would like to create. I'll do one School blog (at the beginning), and later I'll do blogs for each class and one Teacher's blog (e-portfolio).

      Angela, you missed the last step - PUBLISH - as at this moment your blog is just a draft, and not an independent website. You will see the button in the right upper corner of your blog frame - click on it and your link will be working just fine. You should receive the message - "Your blog has been published". As you learn to master it, it will become easy and fun!     Task 1:
    I liked all of the blogs, but these two are my favorite: "Edu-fun Friday" and "Edutech for Teachers blog".
    These blogs provided a great number of online tools, as the blog author wrote, for the 21st century classroom. Additionally, the posted links and resources can be easily integrated into the English classroom.
    I am and a teacher of History too. I liked the LIFE "Photo Archive" and I think these resources will be valuable classroom tools in my history lessons as well.

    Task 2:
    I would like to create a class blog . My class blog will include the following sections: Home, Resources , Assigments, Photo Gallery, Educational Games .
    The purpose of my blog is to encourage students to use certain online tools to learn English and to share interesting online resources with teachers and my students.

    Task 3
    I have analyzed all 3 blogging platforms and I have chosen weebly.

    These blogs are very dynamic and colorful. They catch the visitors' eye and involve them in many interesting news and activities. The language is very friendly and it is very easy to look for needed information.

    I like all the blogs because of their individual voices. These patterns help me to create my own voice. The blogs reflect personalities and who they are. The blog posts are conversational.Their unique voices make the blogs personable and interesting. All bloggers share their passions with the world.

    I’ve just had a look at all blog examples you offered. I liked them all very much!!!
    It’s very hard to choose one type (I want them all!!). Though, probably, I’d pick class blog for I tend to create a platform for posting online assignments for students (Ss) and perform evaluation and get their feedback. At the same time I’d like to have a personal blog (Teacher blog), too. I see now it’s a great thing for storing all achievements you’ve gained in one single place and presents an excellent way of keeping structured all stuff one needs for a portfolio (lesson plans, certificates, CV, projects, articles etc).
    So I wonder if there is a possibility of creating one blog combining the two types mentioned above. If not, I’ll create two. As an Access teacher I will definitely need a class blog, which will possibly have a private section called something like “My e-portfolio” .
    In the class blog I’m planning to post:
    • Assignments for Ss (plus my feedback)
    • Their best works
    • Interesting online sources and tools to enhance Ss’ skills and involve them into class participation
    • Class photos and videos
    My personal blog section (if it’s possible to have one within the class blog) might include:
    • My lesson plans
    • My CV
    • My photos and videos
    • My projects
    I’d like to have opportunity to share info with colleagues, therefore they will have access to this section (if It’s possible. If not, it will be another blog). All this might serve as an online portfolio for school administration and become an essential aid for defending my master degree as well. And, in case I decide to get the first didactic degree, the whole blog could also be helpful.

    Hello, everyone! Every day I convince myself more and more about the opportunities this project brings us as teachers. It’s incredible how easy and comfortable our work can become. Here are the answers:
    1. The two blogs I like the most are Edutech for teachers (http://edutech4teachers.edublogs.org/) and The English Blog (http://jeffreyhill.typepad.com/english/#.Vh6qjPntmkp). Also I would like to mention The Life Feast Blog (http://lifefeast.blogspot.com.br/). Here are concentrated great resources for teaching. It can help the teacher who keeps a similar blog to organize his “files”, to share them with other teachers and, why not, to check the impact of these resources for the others. It helps a lot and motivates for a permanent development, for trying something new and interesting, something that will keep in touch with our students more and more.

    2. I want to create a teacher blog, named Teaching Duties. It will include sections like : Home (my CV, my students), Activity (my best projects, my videos and photos, extracurricular activity), Resources (digital resources, worksheets, grammar rules etc.).
    The purpose of this blog will be to share interesting resources with students and teachers, encouraging them to use these resources; to publish students’ and my best activity.
