ASSIGNMENT 5: Online video making tools for EFL students

Dear EFL teachers,

This week you are going to put your students to work! Svetlana will teach you how to use three online platforms which turn pictures into videos and can become valuable teaching gadgets: Animoto, Picovico, and Stupeflix. Enjoy our collection of online video making tools!

Task 1: Watch two student projects involving digital storytelling. They both involved task-based and project-based approaches. Answer the questions below and post your reflections as a comment to this assignment:

1. Which multiple intelligences did each project focus on? (Read the short article published by American Institute for Learning.)
2. Which of Bloom's Taxonomy categories did the projects tap into? (Use Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel and Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy Process Verbs documents for reference.)

Task 2: Let us introduce your students to several online platforms for video projects. Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of these three platforms: Animoto, Picovico and Stupeflix, choose one and create a task for your students which would require them to create online movies and post the links to your blogs. Place the link to your task below, as a comment to this assignment. 

Animoto is a Web 2.0 tool that allows users to produce videos that blend photos, video clips, text, and music.
  • Learn as much as you can about Animoto before asking your students to use it. Browse through this resource: Web 2.0 Teaching Tools
  • Create a task for your students to put together a video using Animoto related o one of the themes you will be teaching in December (it could be related to grammar, vocabulary, American or British culture, etc). 
  • Before creating the movie, they should elaborate a storyboard: Example here
  • Share this tutorial with them: Youtube Animoto Tutorial
Animoto could be used for the following ideas:
  • At the beginning of the school year, students could use Animoto to introduce themselves or their classmates
  • Students can illustrate their own poetry using digital images they find on Internet or ones they take. 
  • Animoto can be used to present research information to the class. Students could illustrate step-by-step instructions for procedure writing.

Another great tool to experiment with when teaching English isPicovico. Using Picovico your students can make commercials, science fair previews and animated shorts in any content area. You can have your students create book talks or "ads" for a famous historic figure. You may have your students create "advertisements" for an organism or a literary character, a travel commercial for a country or cultural site in a world language course,  make an end of year presentation of class events or a beginning of the year. It is a web tool to create a video with your pictures. After signing up, you choose a video style, upload your pictures, add text, choose your music, add a few details and wait for your video to be rendered. When the video is ready nearly in two minutes, you can share your video via different social media tools or you can also download your video.

  • Create a task which would require your students to create a Picovico movie in English related to one of the topics you will be teaching in December and post it on your blog. 
  • Post the link to your task below, as a comment to Assignment 5. 

Here are a few ideas to use this tool in class:

- Students can create an advertisement of an object, film or a book that they have just read.
- If you go on a field trip, ask students to take pictures and create a video using those pictures later.
- Students can create a video of the things that they have done in holidays.
- The videos can be used for introducing school rules, families, what they like doing etc.

Stupeflix is a tool that allows users to create video montages using their favorite images and audio clips. Stupeflix allows users to drag and drop their images into the desired sequence. You will want to upload your own audio clips as Stupeflix offers only one default soundtrack. But an advantage of Stupeflix is that it allows you to use more than one audio clip within the same video.

"Moldovan Cuisine" involves linguistic intelligence (the speaker is a very good storyteller , I like the way she uses the word structures) and spatial intelligence (a rich and opportune collection of pictures in correlation with what is told: map, visual vocabulary, personal photos). "My video CV" includes several intelligences: linguistic, spatial, musical intelligence, (her story is rich in examples expressed through pictures, photos and songs) intrapersonal intelligence (the speaker describes her own childhood, interesting life, progress and developed skills) interpersonal intelligence ( she is a sociable and active person, it is seen in the group activities she took part: leader of the class, instructor to “Equal to equal”)
    2. "Moldovan Cuisine" includes Bloom's Taxonomy categories such as: knowledge (tell/describe/list), comprehension (paraphrase/ illustrate/ explain), analysis (distinguish/compare), synthesis (organize) and evaluation (relate/decide). "My video CV" involves categories like: knowledge (investigate/ describe), comprehension (illustrate), analysis (compare/ examine, synthesis (hypothesis) and evaluation (consider).
    3. If I had the opportunity to involve my students in a similar project, I would choose the theme “After classes”, which is connected to the curriculum. I think the project would improve my pupil’s linguistic skills (formulating a speech about their spare time, following the correct word order in sentences, using new vocabulary) and thinking skills(speaking about their own preferences and such).

    1. Dear Angela! Thank you very much for your dedication and for such specific answers to the tasks. I liked the idea of your project about after classes activities and most of all I liked that you have mentioned that students have to use some vocabulary in their speech and also they have to pay attention to the structure of the sentences, a aproblem that the majority of the students face.

      If speaking about the assignement created for your students, I could mention that it is a good one, you gave them some tutorial, what is very important and some other things they can use. You could also specify that they will present the project as a speech and you could mention the time limit they are supposed to speak on it.

      The author of the Moldovan Cuisine project develops verbal/linguistic intelligence using controlled writing and reporting, visual/spacial intelligence using pictures and photos, logical intelligence using categorizing and sequencing information and the intrapersonal intelligence by exploiting personal interests and individual instruction.
      My Video CV is based on developing visual intelligence using pictures and photos, verbal /linguistic int. using reporting and free writing and the intrapersonal one using personal reflection and thoughts.

  3. 1.Moldovan cuisine project develops linguistic intelligence, spacial intelligence. interpersonal and naturalist intelligence.The author of the project uses linguistic intelligence as the main aspect but it goes in strong correlation with visual and natural sides of speaker's potential.
    My video CV is focused on linguistic intelligence,spacial and intrapersonal intelligence.The author of the project presents her CV that contains a lot of information. Her voice sounds surely and it shows self-reflection toward what she is speaking about.

    2.Moldovan Cuisine is based on the next Bloom's taxonomy: knowledge. The author selected the necessary information, investigated it and wrote memories. Comprehension-the information that the author had selected, was described in a logical way.Application- the author reports to listeners her ideas using her personal ideas. And of course a taxonomy is evaluation- after visiting the snack-bar "La placinte" the author decided to try it again if she had the opportunity and recommend it to other tourist.
    My video CV is tap into knowledge, comprehension, application,analysis and synthesis. The author of CV lists, defines, selects, expresses general ideas, produces audio message, reports about her activity, explains, organizes and creates the Video CV.

    3. If I had the opportunity to involve my students in such projects I would choose the topic "Travelling". Almost every student spends summer vacation abroad. Thanks to social networks, Instagram they take a lot of pictures. So, one opportunities to share his/her impressions about travelling is creating a movie maker project with photos and description of places, feelings and emotions.
    Another theme connected with curriculum can be Moldova, National Heritage, Home sweet home- themes that can involve students in creating a documentary film about their native place.

    1. Aliona, you made a nice analysis of the given tasks. Thank you for that. Concerning the project I like that you choose topics according to your curriculum, but you have to take into account your students' preferences. As a suggestion you may first ask them what they would like their project to be about. This way they will be more motivated to involve and create.

      The first video project ( Moldovan Cuisine) is focused on interpersonal, naturalist, spatial, musical and linguistic intelligence. It taps into synthesis.
      The second video project is focused on a social experience (interpersonal intelligence) and linguistic intelligence. It taps into Evaluation. If I had the opportunity I would choose topics about EU countries.
      I think that video projects convey messages better because they include summarized written and spoken explanations.

    2. Dear Diana, I have seen the tasks created for your students and I would like to find out if they have to make 3 videos using all these tools or they have to choose one. You had to specify this thing into the assignement, because it is not quite clear. You give them to explore picovico, then you ask them to choose the one they want to use. Maybe it would be more appropriate to show them all the tools and then ask to use one.

    3. I have given three tasks, for the first task they have to use Animoto, for the second- Picovico, and for the third they can choose the one they want. Each task has different topic.

    4. I tried to use these tools and in french classes with the 8th grade the previous week. I have just asked them if they have a g mail account and i have given them some directions what kind of possibilities can offer these tools. So today i received the first video.

    1. Aurelia, I am interested to know if your students like the topic you have chosen about the EU countries. Usually they are not very interested in such topics. What is the reason you would choose it?

      I liked your point of view on video projects and I totally agree with you. Moreover students are more motivated to work and to do their homework if they are to create such projects.

    1. Dear Angela, thank you for your answers. I saw the tasks you have created for your students. It is good that you have explained them how to create a video using these tools, but it would be easier for them to work if you provide them a video tutorial, a link on youtube how the sites work. Beside this it would be better if you make a kind of plan, some ideas about what the video should contain, more detailed.

      Svetlana, there is a video tutorial for the 6th form. Probably you've wathed the 5th form page there I didn't put a tutorial by mistake but I will.
      As about the plan, the 5th form had to write the new words from Word bank and to find pictures, the 6th form had to find the places of interest mentioned in the text from their book and also to find pictures for them. This was their first video but in the future I will think about a plan.

    1. Dear Eugenia, while creating your assignement it would be better if you give some details related to the topic to your students, some guidelines they have to follow while ceating the video. This way it's too general and it will be difficult for them to work and for you to evaluate the video. As for example what you want the students to show in the video.

And maybe it is good that you allowed them to choose the topic they like, I supppose this is as a round up lesson if you have so many topics. I think you could also make a plan of what each topic should refer to or you may suggest your students what things they should pay attention to while creating the video.

      Thank you for your answers and I really appreaciate the topic you have chosen for the project, as we all know its importance. This will help yor students to learn easier and in a more interactive way.
      The assignement you created for your students is a good one, but you could also give them some guidelines what they could include in their description or what you would like to see there. This gives you the opportunity to a better evaluation of the video.

Then it is evident that those two projects develop The theory of multiple intelligences.For instance, we can notice the Linguistic intelligence, that is seen in both projects,then comes Spatial intelligence.     The Videos "Moldovan Cuisine", "My video CV" are a great tool to involve students in the media learning process. They have elements of Civilization and Essay writing, that make them suitable to use in teaching.
    Task 2:
    The students are familiarized with the Video Making tools as Animato.com, Photopeach and Slidestory. The students’ productions are on the stage to be finished, and then they will be published on my blog’s page: Student’s Portfolio

    Sorry for being late with the assignments, but I wish I managed to catch up with everything.
    1. Regarding the first project, „Moldovan Cuisine”, it focuses on visual intelligence when showing different types of meals and their composition. This one is filled by the linguistic intelligence. Showing the inner tastes, it presents intrapersonal development and in the same times implies the receptor to think, to take attitude and compare him/herself with the one of the author’s. Here interpersonal intelligence is developed. The second project, „My video CV”, develops mainly linguistic intelligence, but there are also present spatial, musical and naturalist ones. The last ones are present in the first project as well.
    2. Regarding Knowledge, telling, investigation, observation are explored; on Comprehension—description, confirmation, parafrazing, illustrating; on Application—production, performing, completing, modelling, collection; on Analysis—examination, investigation, comparing; on Synthesis we can notice the organisation and plan design; on Evaluation—selection, judgements. So in just a short piece of work all of the categoriesof the objectives of the Bloom’s taxonomy were explored.
    3. I would like to use one of these platforms for teaching Schooling in the VIIth form.

    3. If I had the opportunity to involve my students in a similar project, I would you choose the topic "My favorite holiday ". They would have to choose their favorite holiday ,to make a presentation about it, to choose a specific music, to found the differences and similarities with holidays in other countries ,etc.
    This topic suits their level(7-th form ), it's going to be funny and they will practice speaking.

    3. I really love civilization topics when students have the chance to discover a lot of unknown facts about famous British/American personalities. So why not trying to experiment with the 10th graders who will need some additional time and resourses for fulfilling the task. The could make a PPP bringing facts about queens and kings who have ever ruled the country. Speaking about younger learners I'd suggest to explore "A Trip around Music", by finding information about the roots of music; to identify what "ballads/lullabies/carols, etc" represent.

  31. "Moldovan Cuisine", the first video project is focused on linguistic, interpersonal, naturalist, spatial and musical intelligence.
    The second video project is based on interpersonal and linguistic intelligence. It is an Evaluation.
    If I had the opportunity I would choose topics closed to my pupils (about friendship, their families, hobbies, future profession etc.)
    I think that video projects can help them to summarize the information and to give written and spoken explanations.

I agree with you that when you choose a topic for a video project you have to take into consideration those topics that could raise your students; interests. As for the project you have created, it's very nice and it's a good idea to create an example for your students. This way you motivate them to work.

      The second video includes interpersonal snd linguistic intelligences.It taps into evaluation.
      Task2.If I had to involve my students into a similar project I would choose the following themes: "It is a Challenging World","Community Local Problems", "In Harmony with Nature" etc. My students would have the possibility to develop their communicative and pragmatic competence, critical thinking, public presentation skills etc.

      As fot the task you have created, I would like to mention that it's good that you use the vocabulary from the book, but you could also provide your students some extra vocabulary, that they don't have in their text-books. For the rest, it's nice. Keep working with video tools.

  35. Sorry as I am late with my tasks but I try to catch up with.
    Task 1. I like this project “Moldovan cuisine” as contains a lot of creativity and evidence of our traditional food. The pictures are very clear and attractive. The voice of the author is nice, clear and with accuracy she has a good pronunciation. It involves a lot of skills of speaking, culture domain and knowledge about the topic.
    The second project “My video CV” all of them are different and good, I like those that I can here the voice it Is more attractive, all of them are focused on linguistic intelligence and musical and special intelligence.
    The first project “Moldovan cuisine” is based on the following Bloom’s taxonomy categories: Knowledge. The author knows the lexic on the topic, the grammar rules, she has a good structure of thoughts.
    Comprehension. The author is aware of the information she relates
    Application .She applies all her knowledge of grammar , language, the order of thoughts and ideas.
    Analysis and synthesis. She is creative, she has selected good materiel for the project, she investigates the information and she says her personal attitude towards the meals.

    The second project ''My video CV" gets into knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation as well.The author of CV lists, defines, selects the best pictures could represent or cover their ideas and activities of their life. Produces audio message, reports about their activity, creates the Video CV, express their opinions sometimes very seriously sometimes with a sense of humor.
    3. If I had the chance to involve my students in such a project I would like to suggest them to speak about their „ after school activities or about their school day „ or maybe about our public places of our town.
