ASSIGNMENT 6: Online Tools to Develop Students' English Speaking Skills

Dear EFL teachers,

Last week we explored web tools which required your students to play with images, words and sentences. Tools such as Animoto, Picovico, Stupeflix, Photopeach and Slidestory would help you develop your students' writing skills. This week we are going to work with web 2.0 tools which, in addition to images and words, include voice. They will offer you the opportunity to evaluate your students' writing and speaking skills.

Task 1: 
  • Explore the Voicethread projects created by a group of college students from Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova;
  • Choose one project which you believe is very well elaborated;
  • Score the project online by filling in the rubric saved in the Google Drive format (write your name and the name of the student you assessed directly in the online version of the scoring rubric).
  • You will all work on one online document, so fill in the scoring rubric which is available (go down the document until you find a free rubric). 
Task 2: This week your students will have to create an online project using images and their voices. Choose one of the tools recommended below (you can also ask your students to work with Voicethread or Movenote, which you already know how to use) and elaborate an assignment for your students, then post it on your blog.
  • the presentation your students will create has to be linked to one of the topics you will teach in November or in December (it needs to be integrated into your curriculum), so please indicate the grade and the topic;
  • elaborate specific requirements for the presentation: indicate which vocabulary your students need to use, which grammar structures they should focus on and what materials they need to read before they start putting together their presentations.

Task 3: Watch the video posted below and elaborate a scoring rubric to assess your students speaking skills, save it in your Google Drive (which is linked to your gmail account) and post the link below, as a comment to this post (Google Drive tutorial).

To create and share your story through UtellStory you can upload pictures, add text captions, add audio narration to each slide, and upload a soundtrack to support your entire story.   • To create a story you need to upload pictures saved on your computer, then add the narration to each slide.

      Aliona, I saw what you have added to your assignement, but the grammar you give your students is like taken apart the rest of the assignement, or maybe you haven't understood it. You had to make an assignement in which your students have to make a project using voicethread or movenote on a given topic and to help them you had to give them some directions what they have to include in that project: what vocabulary, grammar structures and so on.

      Xenia, I appreaciate your work, but anyway I would suggest you when you create an assignement for your students try to involve their creativity as much as it is possible in order to develop their critical thinking. If your task is based on retelling, then you can not do this. If we speak about a project, it should be first of all creative. My opinion is that it would be better if you change the topic and you give some supporting details to your students as required in the assignement.

      Lilia, thank you for your work! The assignement is ok. What I would suggest you is to make a plan of what students have to include in their projects and give them more vocabulary, and also don't forget about grammar.

      Olesea, thaank you for your work. It's a good start, still I would have some suggestions. Taking into account that you have 3 grade students I am not sure the assignement you provided on the blog is enough clear for them. In my opinion it should include some more vocabulary and some word combinations that could help them express theselves and don't forget about grammar structures. You could also show them an example of your own. They are little and they need more guidlines.

      Dear Nadia, the beginning of your assignement is great, still you haven't developped it till the end. I will suggest you some things to add there. You say "The information and vocabulary specific for this topic can be found in Unit 3 “Health and Wellness” or any other sources." Why don't you offer your students a list that they could use? There are so many links that you could use for this topic.Also some grammar structures are missing there.

    Concerning your assignement, You specify there that you start a new unit, my question is how can youu give so many topics for making a project at the beginning of a unit. This could be for a round up lesson. Another suggestion is to give some guidelines for every topic you propose to your students, there you provided very few details. Your students can get confused.
