ASSIGNMENT 8: Bridging the Skills Gap in Multilevel and Mixed Ability Classes. Integrating Web 2.0 Tools

                                                           Dear EFL Blogging School Participants,

   One of the big challenges that teachers face today is large multilevel classes, because even if the learners are grouped according to their level of language, age, or other kind of grouping, any class, in a sense, is a mixed-level group. Teaching large multilevel classes effectively is a concern for most teachers.  
    This week we are going to discuss about large multilevel classes and some strategies to manage such classes. We will also try to see how integrating Web 2.0 tools can help us teach in these large multilevel classes.



Task 1. Study  the resources posted below to find out more information about the problems multilevel classes arise, and the most efficient principles to cope with these challenges:  






and write a 5-phrase paragraph on: 
1      1. what  a large multilevel class is (1 phrase); 
       2. what  the benefits and challenges of teaching such classes are (refer to your own teaching            experience (think of the classes you teach) (2 phrases); 
      3. what principle(s) will be most challenging to implement into your large multilevel classes.  Give      reasons and examples why you think so (2 phrases).   

Task 2. The following resources emphasize on the importance of approaching multilevel classes through the effective classroom management, the cooperative learning, the differentiation, or through offering clear instructions. 
Analyze the strategies and approaches below, and create a personal methodlogical strategy on  approaching the issues you meet  in teaching one current multilevel group of students (if not, create an imaginary one)

Task 3.   Scan through the following online resources, and extract for yourself the main ideas on developing instructive activities for multilevel classes:

 Then, following  your "Teaching Multilevel Class Strategy"  developed in Task 2,  choose one topic you will teach in December to your multilevel group,  and design an instructive activity which will engage all levels of your students from this assigned group, and involve one online tool you studied in Module 2.  
Use the same content (text, audio file, video, etc.) for each level but with appropriately differentiated tasks.  Publish this activity on your blog, including compulsorily: 

1. a 1-paragraph message for your students to introduce them into the topic and general description of the activity explained in a simple and a clear language.  This will include details referring to: 

  the name and a short description of the activity; the language skills the students will reach out at the end of this activity, being differentiated to each students' level (for e.g,. by the end of this activity level 1(elementary)  students will be able to ..., level 2 ( pre-intermediate) students will be able to..., and level 3 ( intermediate) students will be able to...

    I have read the whole material ...it was really interesting.
    1.So i think a large multilevel class means a variety of human resources, working together, who can have different types of learning backgrounds, different levels of literacy in their own native language, but at the time it supposes enough students for interaction and a variety of managerial tasks.
    2. One benefit i liked very much is that i have enough students for interaction, organizing pair work, group work. And the second that it gives e the possibility to use a variety of tasks according to each level of students in a single class.
    3. The most challenging principle for me to implement into a large multilevel class is Scarlette O'Hara's principle,because i had this feeling of a bad lesson and i was really thinking about this...And surely the principle of the variety of the activities and techniques, rising and maintaining students' interest, promoting collaboration are also challenging in multilevel classes.

    Concerning techniques i have in my classroom a smart board, so for this class i make my own learning apps, in can use directly the lino-its, the online dictionaries. They are 24 in the class and for English classes it is quite difficult for me to motivate all be active ant to participate during the class time. I tried to make a simple learning apps...it i think is is quite interesting...

    1. Multilevel Classes.
    When we talk about multilevel English classes, we tend to focus on the variation in the
    students ‘control of the language. We talk about the fluent student sitting next to the one who can
    barely piece together a sentence, or we compare the student who knows the alphabet with the one
    who can report a whole paragraph. We should not to forget the importance of individual factors such as age, intelligence, and motivation. Students are individuals, and the teacher should be very wary of any tendency to generalize about them. Some students are highly intelligent, others less so. Some may appear to be less intelligent than others are when in fact they are not getting the opportunity to learn in their preferred learning style (here we speak about intelligences also). Multi-level classrooms are as varied as the students in them are.
    2. The benefits are:
     Students are able to learn at their own pace
     Students learn to work well in a group
     Students become independent learners
     Students develop strong relationships with their peers
     Students become partners in learning
    The challenges are:
     Finding appropriate teaching resources and material
     Organizing appropriate groupings within the class
     Building an effective self-access centre in the classroom
     Determining the individual needs of each student
     Ensuring that all students are challenged and interested

    3. A concern with teaching the multi-level class is holding everyone’s interest and meeting everyone’s needs, no matter their level. Another very big challenge is assessment. It is very difficult to elaborate different products and descriptors for each of them and make the students understand why his/her mark is lower than their classmates’.

    1. Galina, wonderful work on these tasks. You have noticed all the necessary details about the multilevel classes. I do agree with you that teaching such group of students requires time, energy, effort and first of all enthusiasm, because it is really difficult to create leveled activities and more difficult is to evaluate students. But nothing is impossible as long as we want to excell in something.

  6. Task 1: A large multi-level ESL class is a group of students working together but having varied levels of English and different types of abilities. The advantages of teaching multilevel classes are:
    - students learn to work well in a group and become partners in learning,
    - they develop strong interaction with their peers and are able to learn at their own pace,
    - becoming independent learners they become a rich variety of human resources,
    - we don’t get bored, increase students' self confidence and motivation.

    1) Multilevel classes are classes in which students vary considerably in their language and literacy skills and are in need of a great deal of personal attention and encouragement to make progress.
    2) The benefits of such kind of classes are the following: there is no lack of people for interaction, students learn from the teacher as well as from each other, teachers permanently master their professional skills, students learn to work well in a group. The challenges we face in such classes are: necessity to set control over such a big amount of students (which often leads to loosing temper), a huge amount of written work, finding appropriate teaching resources and material, organizing appropriate groupings within the class, determining the individual needs of each student, ensuring that all students are challenged and interested, enforcing English only policies when teacher is occupied and students are working in small groups or pairs.
    3) As to me, one of the most hard principles to be implemented into my multilevel English class is need assessment. This, at the first sight, easily-obtained or easily-realized principle becomes a matter of great difficulty because most students have already acquired the commonly used answer pattern which they successfully use whenever put in front of this question, and in order to elicit the true needs, I, as a teacher, need to successfully manage to pass through some stages which vary a lot since each student sets his own ones regarding to his individual understanding of trust and friendliness.

    2) The issues you are facing due to their multilevel character:
    a) high-leveled students are often displaying the lack of interest in dealing with the low-leveled ones ,
    b) low-level students often prefer to “give the floor” to their classmates with higher language skills who as a result dominate,
    c)when working in groups most students talk in their native language rather than English

    3)Efficient approaches to apply to address these issues:
    a) grouping mix-leveled students and having high-leveled ones help those of low level
    b) elaborating tasks requiring applying knowledge from other domains, or open-ended tasks )
    c)setting rules related to the language spoken in class and elaborating a “punishment” system
    4) Concrete strategies and techniques to use while teaching this mixed ability group:
    a)Have the students do a multiple-choice task and then split into groups so that each group has at least one student for each option of the task. Have them discuss the options and explain to each other their choice.
    b)practice playing games in which being a winner depends on chance
    c) giving clear instructions and simple patterns to follow while asking and answering question related to the task.

  11. Task 1. A multilevel class is a class that has been arranged by to age-group, where students vary considerably in their language skills and need much personal attention, support and encouragement to make progress.
    For me, teaching a multilevel class has many advantages, like, enough students for interaction and class work is more interactive due to the great variety of opinions, world-views and values, different experiences and styles of learning, but, on the other hand I am not the only instructor, as more students assume the role of teacher-assistants and students cooperate in learning, and it is a steady challenge because I must constantly be aware of many simultaneous activities, forcing me to invent and develop new ways of organizing materials, think, create and grow as a teacher.
    The challenges of such a class are that I am often trapped in the problems of management, feeling frustrated by the huge amount of written work, also few students participate and I am not able to manage activating the quiet students who look and act bored.
    The principle of personalization is the one I feel difficult to apply in my classes, as it is really hard to have time out of the 45 minutes twice a week to provide opportunities in which students may share opinions, relate to their own future plans, explore their ideas on important issues, take stands on controversial topics and have the student talk for at least 3-4 minutes, having the others listening to them. Another principle is the choice and open-endedness, because it requires a lot of time to prepare the needed materials, such as beginnings of sentences, set of questions, brainstorming, etc. which also requires students ‘motivation and interest in learning English.
    Task 2. 1)
    8th grade. The issues I am facing due to their multilevel character are: a) most students’ unwillingness to read the texts at home, b) when working in groups just few students do really work; c) many students do not know language enough so that to understand what their classmates are speaking during classes… In order to address these issues I might apply the following approaches to apply to address these issues: a)when giving homework ask students to write answers to 1-2 questions based on the text; b)assign specific tasks to students when working in groups, c)make students ask questions their classmate after he/she responded...
    4) Concrete strategies and techniques to use while teaching this mixed ability group: a)allow students do their own work in order to get engaged, b) personalize content, build background, and explain the task's purpose are ways to generate, c) assess students as frequent as possible, because the more we get from them, the more attention they pay.

Task 1:A Multilevel class is a class where we have different learning levels ,different oppinions ,different preferences and of course a lot to do ,but little time to manage all.As for me ,I think that it is very difficult to work with a multilevel class ,but we are familiar with this .I think that there are no teachers who have not a multilevel class.In all things we have advantages and challenges .The advantages of a multilevel class are:Students can learn from one another ,a multilevel class is a good experience for us as teachers. .When we have a multilevel class we work more in order to organise our lessons for all students ,we try to find more information ,more technics ,more games ,individual and differents types of explaining ,I think it is a great route in our teaching career and in this way we grow. The challenges that we can have here can be time managing ,students' needs ,students different preferences and levels of learning -and activities that can be familiar to them .As for me the greatest problem is how to manage all in one lesson ,because my task is to give the information to all students ,to those who are shy ,to those who have a high level and keep them interested in my lesson to those who are not interested at all because they love maths or music .

    b) Teaching in such classes gives some benefits like: increase the interest, energy- level the entire group and the students can learn from one another. Sure, there are also some challenges like: determining the individual needs of each student and ensuring that all students are challenged and interested.
    c) I think that one of the principles challenging to implement into multilevel classes is the principle of variety because is very difficult to activate the quiet students and maintain control of other students. Another principle is that of pace it's also difficult to maintain an accordigly tempo and to not lose control of all the students.

    1. A multi-level classroom is as varied as the students in it: it includes students who communicate in English at a variety of different levels or it may also be considered multi-level because on one hand, it includes students with different types of learning backgrounds, such as those who have learned orally and those who have learned mainly from a textbook on the orther hand, so students may also have different levels of literacy in their own native language, finally, the term multi-level can be used to refer to a group of students working together who range greatly in age.
    2. The advantages of Multi-level classrooms are: students are able to learn at their own pace, to learn to work well in a group, to develop strong relationships with their peers, to become independent learners and to become partners in learning.
    The challenges of Multi-level classrooms are:organizing appropriate groupings within the class, ensuring that all students are challenged and interested, building an effective self-access centre in the classroom, finding appropriate teaching resources and material, determining the individual needs of each student, enforcing English only policies when teacher is occupied and students are working in small groups or pairs.
    3. I think the most challenging for me would be to cope in a large Multi-level class, nevertheless, the job of teaching the large class involves many great obstacles, the teacher can often feel out of control, because the class is so large and he/she often feels that he/she has lost authority.

    1. Multilevel class includes students who communicate in English at a variety of different levels, with different types of learning backgrounds, such as those who have learned orally, and those who have learned mainly from textbook and different levels of literacy in their own native language.
    2. In a large multilevel class, there are a great many opinions, a great many points of reference, perhaps many cultural backgrounds, many temperaments, many world-views and values, many different experiences and many styles of learning.
    In the large class we sometimes feel trapped in the problems of management.
    3. The principal interest is challenging for me as to meet the interests and need of all the students and arise their curiosity is not easy at all. Another one is enlarging the circle, because I feel worried about the students who are shy or have a worse level of English that they don’t want to participate as much as I want.

    1. Pupils with different faces, different appearances, different personalities, disciplined, undisciplined, well behaved, less well behaved, shy, self-confident, hyperactive children, students with difficulty in concentrating, with learning difficulties.
    2. The 6th form is a multi-level class which takes a great deal of time and energy. I have benefited from working with these pupils because I have developed my interpersonal skills. I have learnt to budget time better and more carefully, to be more patient, and more self-controlled.
    3. There are many ways to deal with the challenges of large classes. Some of the principles are: variety, collaboration, individualization, setting up routines among others. As teachers of large classes, whenever students loses interest, the problems began. Generally they cause trouble or just distraction for themselves and the rest.

    - make the teaching and learning process differentiate and individualized
    - divide the class into groups of 4-6 students (1-2 high leveled, 1-2 middle leveled, 1-2 low leveled students)

    - motivating pupils working together , helping each other.
    Strategies and techniques:

    Task 1
    A multi-levelled instruction is based on the way of teaching students with different abilities; competences, age, etc. It's a real challenge for a teacher to work in such classes but this is how things turn to be very often. To teach in a multi-level class is really difficult but if you use a variety of methods and try to cope with it things can go easier I think.

    Usually I try to differentiate the tasks according to their individual needs, like dividing text into smaller paragraphs; asking them to make up simpler sentences using the given vocabulary; suggest finding pictures which would show the relationship between the topic itself and the given task - everything possible to easify the work. Unfortunately it does not work really well all the time because the number of students is quite large while the allocated time per lessons is minimum.

    Multi-level classrooms include students who communicate in English at a variety of different levels. They may also be considered multi-level because they include students with different types of learning backgrounds, such as those who have learned orally and those who have learned mainly from a textbook.

    The challenge of a multi-level classroom mean that many teachers fear that the preparation will take much longer, and that the students will be more demanding. Schools that have multi-level classes often have limited budgets, and teachers may fear that they will not be paid for what they are worth. However, it is only by looking at the advantages of the multi-level classroom and employing strategies to overcome the challenges, that teachers can achieve success.
    Advantages of Multi-level classrooms
    • Students are able to learn at their own pace
    • Students learn to work well in a group
    • Students become independent learners
    • Students develop strong relationships with their peers
    • Students become partners in learning
    Challenges of Multi-level classrooms

    A multilevel class means a group of students whose levels of mastering English are different .This class requires a special personal approach towards every child whose needs and interests ,age,type of intelligence are taken into account.These students need motivation and encouragement.Multi-level classes require a lot of time and ingenuity while preparing for the lessons.
    Benefits:
    --students are involved in group-work, thus developing healthy relationships;-students learn from each other;-students get help when needed;-task are distributed according to each student level;-teacher is interested in everyone’s progress;
    Challenges:
    -it is difficult to work with a great number of various students;-it is difficult for teachers to select and apply the best strategies so as to manage to motivate all students;-it requires a lot of time to prepare individualized worksheets /tasks for each level;

    1. The 5th grade
    2.The issues I am facing are: -hyperactive students, thus, sometimes, noisy lessons;-a gropu of students who require special educational services;
    3.Efficient approaches .
    First of all I must set clear ,measurable objectives, estimate my students needs and interests,involve each student in the activity.After that I can:-invent /make up different individualized worksheets;-I can involve students in creating short interesting Power Point Presentations on simple topics;- I can help them design posters;-we can watch short videos on some familiar topics for them;- I can use icebreakers for their motivation; -we can learn together jazz chants, nursery rhymes, tongue twisters;- we can play together competing(ex:“race skiing”) and thus learning etc.

    ability levels while planning the lesson and to adapt the activities to appropriate levels of difficulty. Often the best way to approach this is to use the same basic material as a source and adapt the related activities to several levels so that each student is doing an assignment
    appropriate to his or her level. This practice is also known as “differentiated instruction”. We can use a variety of techniques and grouping strategies and a selection of self-access materials to help all learners be successful, comfortable,and productive for at least a portion of each class time.
