ASSIGNMENT 3: Improve your teaching with blogging (October 26 - November 1st)

Task 1: Watch the video posted below and write 5 different tips on how blogging could be used in your classroom. For example:

  • Students who are absent miss out on classroom discussions. We could tackle the absenteeism issue by using the blog as an archive for class notes. The students who missed a class could read the texts posted online, summarize them and then take notes as homework. The information they missed will be at their fingertips.
  • Blogs could be used as student study guides - when a specific topic is taught in class, ask your students to prove the understanding of that specific topic in greater detail by posting their own examples through podcasts, slideshows with pictures and text, videos, digital posters, etc. These online activities will be saved online, on your blog, and so could be used later on, as study guides for other students.

Task 2: Choose two lesson plans listed below you liked most. How does the teacher use blogs to develop student writing and speaking skills? How different is teaching using a blog from teaching using a textbook?

Task 3: Now it is time to involve your students!

  • Last week you learned how to embed a YouTube video, a Scribd digital document and a photo gallery on your blog. Now you will create a lesson unit similar to the ones posted in Task 2 by clicking the NEW POST button on the lower right corner of your blog.
  • ATTENTION - posts can be created on BLOG PAGES (see the image on the left side). They are used for Assignments or Our Projects type of pages which can be commented by your students.
  • STANDARD PAGES do not have posts. They are usually used for Home or Aboout our class type of pages. They do not need commenting, and serve just for sharing general information.
  • Tutorial: HOW TO CREATE A BLOG POST ON WEEBLY.
  • Use a YouTube video or a Scribd PDF document related to one of the units from your textbook and put together 2-3 tasks for your students. Ask your students to post their homework on the blog, just like in the examples above. Post the link with student comments below, as a comment to this assignment.
  • Get inspired from the blogs created last year, by the EFL Blogging School alumni:
"My teaching portfolio assignments"

I had some free time so I finished this assignment..........now everything depends on students

  2. Task 1

    1. It saves classroom's time, when it comes to check the home work.
    2. It collects the information taught during a certain period of time, and can be accessed in every moment.
    3. The existence of a detailed feedback from teacher and classmates.
    4. A Blog can be used by other students from different grades,so they will know what awaits them in the future.
5.For evidence, that the material was taught and understood by the students.

    Task 2

Speaking about the lessons I like the most.
First of all, I would like to mention that, I see and practice this way of teaching for the first time. All of them (lessons) look nice and useful, but some of them impressed me the most.
Writing an Argumentative Essay lesson is pretty impressive, and at the same time it looks rather simple to fulfil, the tasks are clear enough for students to understand the same as the video.
Also, Let's learn some new vocabulary!, caught my attention. It deals exactly with the main feature of language learning. It's for sure, that books are good but usually they tend to be boring for students.
The Youth is attracted to everything new and unusual,so blogging is a perfect solution

    1. Task 1
I consider that blogs will certainly be of great help and motivation for students' development. Nowadays they are fond of using technologies and they like all the activities of such a kind and from the video I couldidentify the following benefits of using blogs.
*It improves students' listening skills as they can record their presentations and then can listen not only themselves but also their classmates and parents. This can make them more responsible and serious .
      about their assignments.
      * The students will get a more detailed feedback from teachers and classmates.
*It can be of great importance for students who are absent, as they could easier catch up with the material.

    3. Task 2.
All the lesson plans are quite useful for us but as I have to choose 2 of them, I would mention "Let's learn some new vocabulary", it is quite close to my way of teaching vocabulary starting with the definition, synonym and then use it in a sentence. The second would be HARD SKILLS VS. SOFT SKILLS – DIFFERENCE AND IMPORTANCE. They have interactive and various tasks for pupils, but the main idea is to motivate them to write. I think it's very motivating.

  4. Task 1
Using blogs would definitely increase students' interest towards activities which they'd be involved online and speaking about the areas covered I think grammar issues because in class there's no time to explain in detail everything, the classes are quite numerous and what a bright student may get in 2 minutes , a weaker one will need a longer period of time.
    So, it will save time.
Secondly, blog will probably motivate weak students to participate within an interactive game, I suppose thus he/she will improve his speakin/writing skills.

    Task 1
    1. To establish a school-home connection, which is a very important thing because parents must know about their children results .
    2. To find new pen-friends and to improve speaking and writing.
    3. To watch a video story or a song on a specific topic.
    4. To practice grammar using power point and online games.
    5. To practice spelling using audio exercises.
    Task 2
Lessons plans I like the most are
    1. Writing an Argumentative Essay.
Here there is posted a video, and different tasks. Students have to watch the video essay and to answer the questions. I'ts a good ideea to propose the students to watch a video fary tale and to do the tasks according to their level.
    2. Let's learn some new vocabulary!
It remembered me about the time when I was a student. I had a teacher that recommended us to explain the new words, to give them the synonyms, so it's a good way to enrich the vocabulary.

    2. Mrs Daniela please tell me if it is ok or I have to add some more tasks.
The tasks are very easy as these are the first ones.

      Delete
  7. Task 1
    1. The students can present their homework, and all be assessed by teacher.
    2. They can receive feedback from their classmates.
    3. They can see some additional information on blog about the learnt topics, in order to understand them better.
    4. They are aware that their presentations or their works are seen by other, so they become more responsible about their home tasks.
    5. They can always come back to their performed works and see the improvement.

    Tasks 2
I liked all of them but the most I liked: 1) Video Resumes; 2) Let's share our Voice thread Projects. They seemed rather interactive to me.
Video resumes looked very attractive and in the way students did, their resumes could be seen by different employers, who besides the information about the person, can hear the voice of the person. This technique improves students’ speaking skills, and their pronunciation.
Let's share our Voice thread Projects – this gives the opportunity to all the students to present their works, to be heard. It makes them responsible, and improves their speaking skills and fluency. It is a very original way for students’ presentations.

  8. Hello, dear Daniela.
Task 1 Watching the video I can say that:
    - pupils will understand better their theme because they can turn again and again to the blog to review the material.
    - the absent pupils will be ready for the next lesson just clicking and listening to the theme online
    - teacher has the possibility to review with the pupils the past material
    - pupils improve their knowledge of using "hightech" at English lessons
    - pupils have the possibility to do their homework when they want (organize their time).
    - pupils can see their raising in English just reviewing their online homework :)

    Task 2
I saw all the blogs and I like all of them, because all are directed to develop students' skills. They are very well organized and have all the necessary material, so that pupils don't need to surf the Internet. to look for something else in. More of all I like Writing an Argumentative Essay and HARD SKILLS VS. SOFT SKILLS – DIFFERENCE AND IMPORTANCE. They have diverse tasks for pupils, but the main idea is to motivate them to write. I think it's very cool. :)

  9. TASK 1
    1. Teachers can use blogs to publish assignments, resources, and keep students and even parents up to date on class events, due dates, and content being covered.
    2. Teachers can also use blogs to help students’ master content and improve their writing skills.
    3. Students can use blogs to publish their writing and educate others on a particular topic.
    4. Students become more motivated to learn, using the blogs they can learn anytime and anywhere.
    5. Students may use blogging for responding to readings, learn from each other.

    TASK 2
I liked all the lessons. All of them are interesting and useful. But most of all I liked “Writing an Argumentative Essay”. This lesson plan is informative. It helps students learning how to write an argumentative essay. Students have to watch the video essay and to answer the questions. So, it develops listening and writing skills.
The second plan I liked is “Let's learn some new vocabulary!” Learning the new words a great issue for student, because they don’t like to learn them. This lesson is an alternative to drilling. It helps student to learn the vocabulary in an active way.

    1. Diana, a great task! Easy to follow, with a lot of useful online resources in it. Just one technical question - when you asked your students have to make a similar video about their school - do they know how to make videos? Ideally, you should suggest how they should do it. For example using Movie Maker or Animoto or Voicethread - they need to know which IT tool to use. Also, you need to include at least several requirements - how long the video should be, which vocabulary they should include, how the video will be uploaded online and also how their videos are going to be assessed.

    2. Thank you for suggestions!

  13. Task 1: Tips on how blogging could be used in classroom:
    1) we improve our teaching experience passing from old teaching methods to new modern ones in order to have qualitative results
    2) blogs are a rich collection of ideas and activities. Other blogs can inspire us to create new teaching ideas
    3) students who missed the lesson can find the information online when they are free to do so (also there are students who need more time to understand or think over the lesson)
    4) we encourage students to progress; asking them to post assignments or comments we develop their writing skills, also there are a lot of speaking, listening tools. Using blogs, students can post recorded presentations of themselves
    5) blogs are a way to involve all pupils (sometimes the lesson is not enough to check all of them)

    Task 2:
    I like:
    • Video Resumes - Student’s writing skills are developed because students express their own point of view after watching different projects.
    • Let's share our Voicethread Projects - Student’s writing and speaking skills are developed. Some students registered their voice, others wrote comments. The audio recordings avoid the necessity for the teacher to check each student’s pronunciation too.
Teaching using a blog is a flexible teaching way as it offers the opportunity to work when you have time. It attracts student’s interest because it involves digital literacy. It is a new teaching tool.

  14. Task 1
-students are used to do their homework in copybooks. But for this, they look up the new words (usually in google) , try to find something interesting on the Internet or just copy an essay from a site. Blogging excludes paper and ink and offers students an easier acces to the necessary address.
-blogging is a continuity from school activity and hometasks- students are proposed other sources of information, of additional materials to improve knowledge.
-blogging implies students in reading, watching, thinking and writing. students should pass all these steps to get a good result.
-one can't say anymore that he doesn't understand the lesson becouse of missing lessons. Please, check the blog and learn individually- it's easy, interesting and very very clearly explained.

    Task 2
From the listed lesson plans I can mention
    1.Emotional Branding
    2.Let's learn some new vocabulary!
The teacher develops students' reading and writing using definitions, explanation, synonyms, project, voice recorder etc. Students are involved in a research, in a conversation (posting comments) and even watching video materials.

    Task 3
    http://englishforbascalia.weebly.com/homework

    ReplyDelete
  15. Task1. a) Students can add comments after reading a poem, or an essay
    b) Students will develop their critical thinking
    c) Students who were absent they can use the blog to get acquainted with their home tasks, and with the lesson topic
    d) They can improve the public speaking and listening skills, using the MP3 player posted on blog
    e) They can record a presentation and share it with the class
    f) They can complete different assignments.
Task 2. I enjoyed all the lesson plans. Students can develop their reading and writing skills using a blog.
For example: They can watch a movie and they will be able to register the voice on the recorder, to express their opinions, or to write a detailed description of that video, in order to share it with the classmates. Also they can write an essay in 150 words on different topics and the teacher will check and correct the mistakes. They can answer to a Quiz, or they can make up a Quiz and ask students to answer at it. The students can analyse a graph, and write their conclusion.
Using a blog in teaching experience is interesting, because it opens great opportunities for students and enriches the students knowledes in different domains. It helps students to develop reading and writing skills in order they will be able to afford a lot of tasks.

  18. Hello, dear Daniela!
    Task 1:
    1) The blogs increase student's interest in completing the tasks;
    2) The students can post questions and share their thougts;
    3) They can participate in online dicussion that increase their speaking communication;
    4) The students who are missing can find the new theme on the blog and be ready for the next lesson;
    5) Using audio execices, they practice their listening snd speaking skills focusing on voice modulation, inflection, etc.
Task 2: All the lessons are very interactive, useful and organized, i like them. But i have to choose two of them, so:
    - ,,Emotional Branding'' i like this lesson because the tasks are differentiated. First of all the students have to listen very carefully the video after that, they have to continue the phrases, to explain some words, give their own opinion.
-,, Let's learn some new vocabulary'' in this way the students learn better the new words and they remember them.

    4. teachers can share different materials and serve a source for others;
    5. students post their essays, voice presentations and comment on their colleagues results.
    Task 2.
    1. Let's learn some new vocabulary- being an organized tool for students to learn and use new vocabulary in contexts, which develops students'writing skills;

    Task 2
All of them are interesting and useful to develop student writing and speaking skills.
Lessons plans I like the most are:
-,,Let's learn some new vocabulary!"- students will enrich their vocabulary using this way of teaching , because they must to find a new word , explain it, find synonyms and give their own examples.

    TASK 1:
    1. to make a direct connection between teacher and students
    2. to train directly the listening and reading skills
    3. to practice online grammar knowledge and skills to improve them
    4. to practice 4 language skills
    5. to practice different games and exercises that are checked online

    TASK 2:
    I like more
    1. Argumentative Essay.
Students should watch essay and answer questions. The idea is a good one, it offers students to watch a story and do tasks on it.
    2. Learn some new words!

    1. Svetlana, your blog is full of useful resources, YouTube videos and other great learning tools. However, I got a bit a bit lost when browsing it :)

Please organize your blog to make it easier to navigate:
      1) Each task or assignment should be a separate post with Title, Date and Body
      2) Links should not appear as long lists of characters - use the hyperlink option - write a title and make it interactive (when students would click on the title, they would be redirected to a separate link). See instructions here: http://hc.weebly.com/hc/en-us/articles/201018148-Create-Links
      3) Codes should not appear as lists of characters - the blog should only display the final image, not the code. If you see the code and not the document, then there must be a mistake in it.

Good luck! Please let me know when you improve the blog.

    1. Svetlana,

In Task 3 you had to create an online lesson plan with tasks for your students according to the examples given in Task 2. So, each of your blog lesson plan should have the following structure:

Title (For example: Let's study Present Perfect)
Clear tasks (Task 1: Watch the YouTube video and write how Present Perfect is formed. Task 2: Listen to the song and find all the examples of present perfect. Task 3: Practice using present perfect using these online quizzes, etc.)
Evaluation criteria (Write a poem with at least 10 examples of present perfect)
Homework (Create a digital poster to explain everything you learned about present perfect)

      Good luck!

  35. Task 1
1.The student can get good instructions from the teacher and to pile up his ideas about the topic
2.The student can get the needed time for his homework and to look for information exactly on the site and documents the teacher offers him and not to lose the time in internet on looking for nothing
3.The student becomes more responsible for his tasks as they are seen by other classmates and he gets in a competition
4.They can come back to see the comments of the teacher and his classmates
5.They are more interested in a blog because it’s new and they are sometimes bored by books in the classroom.

    Tasks 2.
I liked all of them but most I liked: 1) Video Resumes; 2) Let's share our Voice thread Projects. They seemed rather interactive to me as they can keep your attention on it.
Video resumes looked very attractive and very proficiency from technical point of view it takes much more time to make it and this must be appreciated and the students decide what to put in his video, we can hear the voice of the person. This technique improves students’ speaking skills, and their pronunciation, critical thinking and creativity, cultural domain.

  39. Sorry for my late reply.
    Task 1
    1. Give permanent reports regarding literature and texts the currently learn.
    2. Interact virtually with a writer or any important personality according to the topic.
    3. Ask students to make lesson summaries and post them on the blog. In this way they revise, but also leave a chance for the absent students to get acknowledged.
    4. Writing essays and make competitions. Teacher can announce an essay competition and ask the ss who want to compete to post their work on the blog. In such a way the competition is transparent and encourages students to involve.
    5. For daily activities, like homework, different exercises.
    Task 2
All te lesson are wonderfull and are based on developing multiple intelligences. All create new circumstances that students have to use and develop in order to achieve the lesson goal (objectives). Using books is also productive, but to concentrate students and to motivate them to work is much more difficult. I tools are closer to them and the motivation is intrinsic.
