Online Mentoring: Week 2. What do you think about Web 2.0 tools?

Dear EFL teachers,

This week you are going to connect to your mentors and find out more details about the following:

  • Does your mentor keep a website or a blog?
  • If yes, what is the purpose of the website or blog? Who are the website or the blog readers? How often is the website or the blog updated?
  • Is your mentor active on any social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn for example?
  • What does your mentor think about Web 2.0 tools and their role in today's society?

Post the replies below, as a blog comment. Have an inspiring week!

  1. Hi,
My mentor, April and her family keep a blog: https://acumaicimoldova.wordpress.com/. The purpose of this blog is that their family and friends in the US to keep up with what they're doing here. She does not have a FB account but she uses her husband's. And like I do she thinks that Web 2.0 tools are not only very useful in the classroom but that we must find ways to use them so that students will be competent, responsible users of technology. Often our students know the basics of using tools, but they might not know how to do things, like be polite online.
    Best regards

    1. Hello,Naty!keeping the blog for such noble purposes is a good example to follow indeed. It implies so many things together: both work and sharing. It might be a good example for the others to follow,, as it might be regarded as a sort of method of applying such type of activity. As for web 2.0 tools, it is also good to have a s many opinions as possible, because new technologies go very well together with those traditional ones. I assume you will have a very fruitful collaboraiton with your mentor. Enjoy this fantastic time!!1

    4. Stela Tagadiuc, it is an interesting way to not have a website, many of us do not have it and still, things continue to be interesting and useful. Your Mentor and you can have so much in common, sharing upon this very issue indeed. Time is different for us all,and as Christiana sais, can be nice with Facebook or Skype. On this note, let me wish you to have the best of your collaborations and sharings in the future assignments. Good luck!!!

So she travels to various villages and write about them. The people who read it are mostly Moldovans but also people who are just interested in travelling. As far as the social networks, she is on twitter, facebook,Linkedin, and Instagram. 3. Hi, everyone! My mentor, Dean Vallejo, has a blog: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/deanvallejo. He uses it to keep his family and friends updated on his adventure with the Peace Corps in Moldova. He tries to update it at least once a month. He uses Facebook and Instagram as well. When he had his own business back in the US, he also used Twitter and LinkedIn. He thinks Web 2.0 tools are great, but he has to keep things in perspective. He just tries to have fun with it and not get involved in negative interactions.
That’s all I’ve found out about my mentor’s opinion concerning Web 2.0.

    1. Mariana, having a blog is definetely a great opportunity to keep your friends informed about your life, especially if you have less opportunitues to communicate in reality. As for web 2.0 tools might be used for different noble purposes as well and for fun. Good luck with your next assignments.

  4. Hi, my mentor is Matt Salerno.
Both, with his wife they are blogging about their time in Moldova, acumaicimoldova.wordpress.com, and it operates more like a website than a blog. They update it about every two weeks, and their family and friends subscribe to new posts. Their intended audience is family, friends, and colleagues in the US.
They sparingly use Facebook account to connect with people.
As a teacher, Matt thinks it is important to be "with it" about Web 2.0 because students are starting to think in ways that reflect Web 2.0.And he thinks there is an appropriate place for it--to communicate in ways that are not possible face-to-face or on the phone. I think it is a very good point of view about web 2.0

  5. Hello, hello everybody. As I have mentioned in the previous post my mentor is Christiana Holsapple. She is working in Comrat in the Turkish lyceum and with students. She doesn't have any blog or website, but she is interested in my Blog. Being in the role of Sherlock Holmes I have found that she is not dependent of computer. She has a Facebook account but is not an active user of it.It proves her passion for reading.
We are going to meet and have some common activities with pupils from my school. Also I have invited her to our training with local teachers that will take place next week. I am eager to know her and to do something together.

  6. Hi, Emma and everyone!!
Here are some more detailes I've learnt about my metor: she has a blog that she hasn't updated in a while, http://partslesstraveledmoldova.tumblr.com/. The people who read it are mostly Moldovans but also people who are just interested in travelling. As far as the social networks, she is on twitter, facebook,Linkedin, and Instagram. I assume, many people are interested in that. Moreover, it can be useful material for the students as well and the techers can take it as an example. Wish you to have many more interesting discoveries and collaborations together. Enjoy all the possibilities.

  7. My mentor April also has a blog, but she is not using it with her classrooms right now. It's a personal blog that her husband and she are keeping for their family members in the US to keep up with their adventures in Moldova. This is the address: http://acumaicimoldova.wordpress.com/ .
She also uses her husband's Facebook page, and that allows her to check for information that she needs or to message people individually, and sometimes she
checks his Twitter, but she doesn't use those herself because she doesn't want to spend more time than is necessary doing those things.
I thinks that Web 2.0 tools are really useful and that it's important to teach students how to use them responsibly. It's great that these tools provide a real-life, authentic motivator for students to use and learn English. And they certainly provide connections that weren't possible in foreign languages even 10 years ago. She also thinks that it's important for us to teach students how to use these tools responsibly, respectfully, and safely.

    1. Hello,Eugenia! It seems that keeping a blog has so many different aims and each of them has a special predestination, hasn't it? And the opinions about web 2.0 tools are very important ones to hear from the Mentor. Indeed, what can be more important, than to teach students how to use different on-line resourses wisely, safely and reasonably in order to make it a learning tool. Good luck for your further collaboration.

  8. Hi Emma and everyone ! From the letter of my mantor Matt I learnt that he used blogging only a few times. Most of all he and his wife are blogging now here in Moldova, to speak about their time. Their blog operates more like a website than a blog. They update it about every two weeks and their audience is their family, friends and colleagues from US. Two years ago he used a blog to share teaching resources with other teachers and Twitter to browse for new teaching resources and to share them with other teachers.
They also use Facebook to interact with people and Skype particularly for their daughter to see their relatives in the USA.
Personally he cares more about face-to face interaction than digital, in case there are no possibilities to speak face to face or on the phone social media are good ways too.
He thinks that Web 2.0 tools are important because they are ubiquitous , everywhere, many students are familiar with posting, they understand it and the teachers should be there with their students.

    1. Hello,Eudochia!Your Mentor looks to be very advanced person indeed, because keeping blog, and being aware of so many techniques and applications means that is is much to learn and to share together. Moreover, it keeps both his family, kids and students with colleagues be always on the wave of knowledge and news. However this is nice, as he sais, to have a face-to-face communication if possible.
It seems that you are going to have a marvelous collaboration. So, have a nice week with your on-line meeting and we are anticipating your pictures and new discoveries from this event! Good luck!

    1. Hello,Veronica! Having your Mentrot so close and her intention to visit you--what can be better. The on-line possibilities that help us make connections with Mentors and students is awsome, but if you can organize a live-session -- it would be a fantastic way to share experience and make it so important nd useful for your students. Good luck and please let us know the details!

    2. Our Skype session last week was aborted due to spome technical difficulties but we are rescheduled for Tuesday! Very excited to speak with Veronica's students about the Seasons. There was a blog planned for my husband and I (we are serving with the Peace Corps in Balti together), but life has gotten in the way! We may still put ome together!

Web 2.0 is a fantastic and interactive means to hget children to love education: I see the tools as essential to culitvate critical thinking but also must be infused with string social interaction as both skills will be importnat in a well-rounded education for our future leaders!

  11. My mentor, Dean has a blog. He uses it to keep his friends and family back home updated on his adventure with the Peace Corps in Moldova. He tries to update it once a month but he also automatically feeds his Instagram posts to his Tumblr blog.
    http://deanvallejo.tumblr.com/

He is very active on social media. He uses Facebook and Instagram, usually a few times every week. If interesting things are happening, he may use it more often. He also has accounts on Twitter and LinkedIn, but he is not very active with them.

He really enjoys Web 2.0 tools. He thinks it is a way to interact with friends and family. Additionally, having the ability to interact with organizations for news, community, etc. is really interesting. He likes to keep his activity interesting and mostly fun. Some people get too personal and/or mean spirited. He does not believe in that type of activity.

  13. Hello, dear Emma,

My mentor Aaron has a blog where he occasionally writes regarding his experiences here in Moldova and others travels throughout Europe, etc. He initially did it for his friends and family back in the United States but he has noticed that it has become popular for his Moldovan friends to visit as well.

Regarding social media sites, he has a Twitter handle, Facebook page, VK account and LinkedIn page as well.

He doesn't use the VK, Twitter and Facebook page that often, but find them useful for following different news sources throughout the world and keeping connected with his friends that he has made throughout his travels, etc.

In his opinion, technology is a great tool that can be used by people throughout the world with the means to participate in such platforms. Web 2.0 applications have great potential to connect and link our lives, save time and help us work more efficiently and effectively. In his previous position he worked with several of the Web 2.0 applications, including Prezi, virtual slideshows, various video conferencing tools and virtual desktops, etc. As well as email and many other mobile components; Google Docs, Wikisites, etc.

  14. Hello, dear Emma,

My mentor kept his own website while he was in college, but shut it down years ago. Mr. Mantani is very active on facebook and uses instagram.
Regarding Web 2.0 tools, he says „I love web 2.0 tools. My google drive, docs and calendar are open anytime I am at work and I use them to collaborate with other Peace Corp Volunteers and Moldovan partners. I believe they will continue to play a larger and larger role in society as workplaces and people become more mobile and need to collaborate from all over the world. There is however a security risk or keeping so much personal information on the web and it makes it more difficult to separate work life from personal life.”

  16. Svetlana Roibu Week 2:
Hello, Emma Matreniuc. I am Svetlana Roibu. My online mentor is April Salerno. She is in Moldova with her husband Matt. They are teachers. They have a blog to keep family members and friends in America updated about their time in Moldova. They post a mix of things that are personal and professional, so that Their friends and colleagues will know what they are doing here. They try to post about once a week, but sometimes less often.

April and Matt use the same Facebook page. Using it allows them to keep up with people and to contact people here in Moldova. But she doesn't keep her own page, because she doesn't want to spend a lot of extra time doing it. Most of my friends are able to read what is happening with us on our blog. I think that
Web 2.0 tools are useful for students as a way to help engage them and to introduce them to 21st-century learning skills. More and more, in the USA, using technology tools is part of the standards (curriculum) that we in English are required to teach students. And I agree with April that there is one important thing that they must learn – it is how to use these tools responsibly.

As for your communication with your Mentor we can anticipate a very fruitful collaboration indeed. Let's anticipate oyur on-line session and the topics you will cover and share. 19. My mentor is Matt Salerno.I have found a lot of things about Web 2.0. and about their site .So,
he has tried blogging only a few times, both for personal and professional reasons. His wife and Matt are currently blogging about their time here in Moldova .Their site operates more like a website than a blog. They update it about every two weeks, and their family and friends subscribe to new posts. Their intended audience is family, friends, and colleagues in the US. In the previous two years,Matt had used a blog to share teaching resources with other teachers.
Facebook is used by his family to connect with people. In the past Matt has used Twitter to browse for new teaching resources and share them with his colleagues.
Matt's opinions about Web 2.0.are the following:
-web 2.0 tools are important because they are ubiquitous--everywhere-- so, many students are familiar with posting, commenting, editing, etc.
-As a teacher, Matt thinks it is important to be "with it" about Web 2.0 because students are starting to think in ways that reflect Web 2.0.
I share Matt's view upon the great importance of Web 2.0 tools .I will implement everything I have learned and also advice my colleagues to do it.Thank you a lot!
